Every so often you come across some information just too awesome not to share. Like how Mithridates III and Orodes II smultaneously tried to gain support for their claims to be the next king of Parthia by publishing coins calling themselves "philopater".
For those among us who do not speak Parthian, I will translate that word; means "lover of the father".
Now, one might laud two sons for having such love for their father that they title themself philopater, even as each tries to kill his brother.
Or, if one was cynical, one might call Mithridates III a liar for putting such a slogan on his coin based on the fact he actually murdered his father with poison.
In the interest of fairness...Orodes participated in the poisoning.
So apparently, the Parthians believed that murdering dear old dad through poisoning meant you loved him.
Now would be a good time for someone to chime in with the helpful factoid that society today is worse than it has ever been...
