I imagine being a modern holy man is difficult. You might find yourself committing and suicide (Heaven's Gate), being murdered by the government (David Khoresh), trying to poison an entire town (The Rajneesh Puram), having tax problems (Oral Roberts), integrity problems (too many to list), adultery problems (Bakker), or credibility issues (the pope).
Still, with all the bank that comes with some of those positions, I imagine it is a worthwhile gig. In fact, there is really only one reason I can think of to not become a holy man myself, invent my own religion, and become a multi-millionaire. Namely, I am afraid someone might get me drunk and whack off my magic, lucky leg with a scythe and steal it.
