In the interest of full disclosure I should point out that I truly love the sword-and-sworcery genre. I enjoy reading fantasy literature from such luminaries as Margeret Weis and Tracy Hickman, Michael Stackpole, Tolkien, and so forth.
With that said I think sometimes people go a little over the top with their enjoyment of the genre. For example the people so into playing Everquest that they take advantage of the code written into the game to purchase pizzas online...or who use real money to purchase fake money (doesn't that sort of defeat the purpose of "role-playing"?), the people who legally change their names to their created characters (okay, so that one I have not actually read of happening...but would it surprise you? Nope. It fit right into the list) these people I think are going a bit too far.
See also the guy who robbed a lingerie shop of various women's undergarments and adopted as his defense that at the time of the robbery he was a fictional character and as such is innocent.
Yes, you read that correctly...dude was playing a live role playing game and decided to rob a women's underwear store. Now, at some point one assumes the disconnect between reality and fantasy gets blurred...but it is exceptionally questionable when you realize no female fantasy elf has ever worn a bra...that is far too heavy a layer of clothing for virtually any female character in the annals of fantasy.
Good luck with that defense, dude. Use your mystic skills to spirit yourself away. Let us know how that works out for you.
