For decades kids have written their thoughts in journals, diaries, what have you...and most of the time, those thoughts have been fairly private. Sure, a sibling might break the "lock" or find the secret stash of information, but that was about as far as it went. Now, we have blogs instead...little slices, little looks at people's brains that are out there for public consumption.
IN the year plus I have been writing here, I have written a lot of things that might be controversial, might anger people, irritate, offend...and hopefully, occasionally entertain. I would say it is a great tool...but perhaps I spork too soon.
Now, some of the things I have written, dor instance the Shared Memories piece that was one of the first things I ever did, that castigation of a wild-eyed maniacal writer might prevent me from being on the chess team. A critique of Bush might throw me out of basketball. The bit I am about to write on Kennedy might end my debate team career.
Who decides what is "inappropriate"? How do you define a subjective ideal? It is easier when things are concrete...for instance, if your hair is business in the front, party in the back, then you have a mullet (Tom Hanks, I am looking in your general direction here). Oh, wait...people are debating that...so how are these kids going to know what is appropriate and what isn't?
I am going to go out on a limb here. At some point, an honors-type student will be kicked out of athletics over something they posted they thought was innocent that some overzealous official decides was inappropriate and there will be a huge furor over this involving courts, lawyers, cries of 1st Amendment violation, and defenses that "this is not what it was designed to stop."
Since I am alone on this one and they all think it is great, maybe I am wrong. And maybe we SHOULDN'T spork up when we see something we disagree with. But I doubt it.

What on earth is the school district doing policing students outside of school? If I decide to go and jaywalk on Monday night at 1 in the morning (after curfew for those under 18) am I going to be expelled for inappropriate behavior? It is just ridiculous that somewhere kids are required by law to go is allowed to apply such ridiculous restrictions on them even while they are doing things completely unrelated to school. I am actually expecting to hear about them asking for a levy soon to pay for extra staff to police students blogs. *rolls eyes*
We think it's inappropriate to make so many spork jokes. After all, they can't help being sporks. You should be shut down. We're telling the principal.
