Inside the Spike Lee sell-out

I have never been a huge Spike Lee fan. From his drug-induced titling ("a Spike Lee joint") to his "white is bad, holding everyone down" mentality to his rather bleak outlook on life, I just typically do not need to see his material. I do believe there is a place for it, and, to a point, even a need for it...I just don't want to see it.
With that said, and to prove advertising does work, I went to see Inside Man this past...Saturday? I think it was Saturday. Having seen a couple Spike Lee movies before I had a pretty good idea of what to expect. And for the most part it was according to form. Lots of political commentary, lots of portrayals of white racism, lots of portrayal of corruption, particularly by police and mayors...and of course anyone with money. I would be interested to know how much Lee himself is worth. Be that as it may, his modus operandi was firmly in place.
What surprised me was the heavy use of product placement. Dell and Pepsi got their money's worth, for sure. Not only were their brands present and accounted for, they played prominent roles in the movie. I do not want to give anything away, but the first time you see Dell computer boxes, 2 wide and 2 high, they are framed in such a way as to draw total attention to them. They were the first thing I noticed in the room, and that is despite the fact two or three characters were foregrounded. They were simply that prominent. And that is repeatedly true.
There is no logical reason to have used the room where the Pepsi machnie is placed. It is out of place, out of character for the setting, it has nothing to do with anything expcept product placement. It was so jarring and out of place that the afterimage is still burned in my mind.
Overall the movie is a fairly entertaining piece with a couple of thought-provoking moments and, while a little preachy, it is more main-stream acceptable than most of his efforts. Nothing I feel like I need in my permanent library, but it was watchable. I was just shocked by the product placement...it was one place I had felt safe from that. Oh, well, back to Bamboozled, I suppose.
