How did that taste?

We had a morning meeting at Elmers yesterday. For some inexplicable reason, whenever I go to this particular Elmers I am overcome by the unbeatable urge to consume a Dum-Dum lollipop upon exit. Possibly because I am dum...hard to say. Some people would spell it "dumb", but they have no concept of voiceless comedy that isn't funny, so that is their loss.
Be that as it may, yesterday's flavor selection was "banana". Now, as a general rule I consume between 3 and 6 bananas for breakfast. This leads to a couple interesting points. First, I believe I am fairly qualified to determine what does and does not taste like a banana. Second, with about 30 flavors staring me in the face, why would I select one I am so eminently familiar with? Third, being so used to banana flavoring, do I really need banana flavored sugar?
Well, the last one is actually pretty easy to answer. Like most "x flavored" products, any resemblance between the banana flavoring of a Dum Dum lollipop, banana flavored ice cream, banana flavored twinkies or ding dongs or ho hos or rice crispies or tobacco or whatever other random product you want to throw out there is purely coincidental and any resemblance to ACTUAL banana flavors, real or imagined, is a minor miracle.
Here is a news flash; wrapping some sugar on a stick and spray painting it yellow does not a banana make. Peeing in a bottle and mixing in some food coloring does not an orange cream make. Punching a birthday food offering does not a pound cake make. What that has to do with the rest of this diatribe I really have no idea. I figured at this point it is so random and pointless nobody will notice anyway.
But I wonder how many people actually fall for that gimmick anyway? Do you actually puchase "Fruit Fly flavored Potato Chips" actually believing it will taste like real fruit flies? Or do you just admit you like the name but see no resemblance to real, natural flavors? I would write more, but the ice cream man is passing by. And he is advertising cinnamon caramel apple streusel topped with strawberry cheescake wrapped in fudge. Who could resist that?

I'm a sucker for dum-dum's (or the other way around) too!

Really? That's a lot of bananas.
