In my continuing attempt to be a valuable employee, I was perusing a trade magazine when I saw an advertisement for a door company the name of whom I will not divulge in an attempt to protect the stupid and incompetent.
Their ad bragged of their meeting the "71% FSC" guidelines which meant, and I quote, "At least 71% of the materials contained in this product are derived from well-managed products"...of course, an asterisk directed you to the footnote which limited this 71% promise to the Mahogany units.
Now, here is a mathematical type question...what kind of forests do the other 29% of the materials come from? Poorly managed? Badly managed? Horribly managed? Stolen? I do not really have an answer for that. What I do know is claiming 71% come from well-managed as being a good thing is insulting to me as a distributor and to every consumer with a modicum of intelligence...and that insult applies whether the person cares about green building or not, whether the consumer is an ardent environmentalist nazi or someone who takes delight in despoiling the environment.
The idea that I will be impressed by a promise that less than 3/4" of my unit is well-managed indicates a low regard for my ability and willingness to do research and assumes I will be impressed that irresponsibility is only 29% of the equation.
I wonder how "well-managed forest" is defined and what is in the other 29%. Maybe next time I see one of their units I will check it for boll weevils or woodchucks or something. Maybe some brun marks where the wood was rescued from a fire?
In any case, this column comes 71% from a well-managed mind. It is just too bad what made it to the web comes from the other 29%.
