Apparently the smurfs were busy that weekend

Seems many British passengers making the mistake of transporting cash and valuables in their luggage are coming up short at the end of their journeys. Yet nobody enters or leaves the baggage compartments for the duration of the journeys. Is it the work of evil smurfs (the very best kind of smurf, by the way)? Is it the work of someone using sporks to tunnel in and out? Or is someone smuggling midgets...err, dwarves...err...little people....err, stature-challenged individuals in hidden in luggage, having these under-height human beings scope out the luggage and remove the good stuff, then hide in their baggage again and making a haul?
