I did not get to watch much television growing up. More often than not we did not even have a television in the house. Occasionally, however, we would and sometimes when we went to Grandma Alda's we got to watch a fair bit. One of the shows Grandma loved was Hawaii Five-O. I don't remember much about it but there was one show that stuck out in my mind because the premise was so ridiculous.
In this show, set I would assume some time in the 70s or 80s, the lead guy...was his name Garrett? Dano? Whatever it was, he got captured. Oh, not by who you would expect...it wasn't a criminal or a rival or the FBI or CIA in some convoluted cop investigation case. No, he was captured by a Japanese soldier from World War II who had gone into hiding and did not believe the war was over.
Now, even at 10 or 12 years old that was too ridiculous to be believed. After all, World War II ended in 1945. By the time I was born it had been over for 26 years. I was young but not so naive as to believe someone would hide out for 6 or 7 times as long as the war lasted and somehow not be found and when he was found, not believe the war was over.
Of course, as often happens with assumptions...I was wrong. That did happen. Courtesy of the History Channel, I bring you this gem; "After 28 years of hiding in the jungles of Guam, local farmers discover Shoichi Yokoi, a Japanese sergeant who was unaware that World War II had ended.
Yes, sometimes truth is stranger than fiction. And funnier.
