2001: A space odysey

Don't get too excited..we are not checking out a movie here, but rather examining space between my ears.

It is a frightening place. Side by side you find quotes from such things as noted philosopher Rickey Henderson, shows like the Simpsons and Futurama, Bible verses, mottos of famous people, and quotes from politicians.

It is full of memories of stunts pulled, friends helped and harmed, and epic tuba solos executed by midgets.

Well, okay, so maybe that one is completely made up...but that is the beauty of my mind. I make up stuff I find funny...or else steal it shamelessly from old time radio.

Sometimes things percolate in my mind for days. Other times for weeks. And on at least two fronts, for years.

And what a fun word that is...percolate. Used to be you literally had to percolate your coffee. Sounds vaguely like something you need to be an adult film star to do...but it isn't.

Oh, for those halcyon days of yore when coffee percolated, popcorn was popped by drizzling oil and kernels in a pan, heating the stove, and listening to it pop against the lid even as butter was melted on the next burner, to be drizzled over the popcorn then salted while piping hot...

Excuse me for a moment.

Okay, I am back. Had to clean the drool off my keyboard.

Strange how many of my memories revolve around food. Mom making fudge, sugar cookies, two kinds of peanut brittle...with peanuts for the normal people, without for me because I do not like peanuts.

Which makes it even funnier that my lunch selection this week is peanut butter and jelly.

Oh, I had plenty of peanut butter and jelly sandwiches growing up. Our friend Bob Henningsen would bring us strawberries, Mom and Deanna, sometimes Pam, Mary, a couple others would have canning parties.

Mom would fill the freezer...yes, we had a free-standing, full size freezer that looked like a refrigerator...with strawberry jam in those cool little Tupperware square cartons.

There was just something about opening a freshly unfrozen strawberry jam, spreading it on french toast or a sandwich...

Excuse me.

Okay, back again. Either the ceiling is leaking through three floors or I have a real drooling issue tonight.

As you can tell, a journey through my mind becomes a strange, meandering trip through very interesting areas.

Too bad there is no point to this...

A very nice Seinfeldian tangent.

Sad part is that I actually remember doing/seeing these things while growing up.
