I always loved comic books. Growing up I myself could not afford them. Fortunately I was blessed with friends who could and shared them so I was able to keep up with Batman, Superman, a few miscellaneous others. Later when I gained some disposable income I started following some others...like the classic Western Jonah Hex...cute, feller, ain't he?
I also followed on occasion some of the more esoteric comics...X-Men, Green Lantern...and it was amazing how often the universe was threatened by failed science projects run amuck. Well-meaning people would threaten the world with flooding (Avengers #26) for example. The Fantastic Four was forever saving mankind from some scientific catastrophe or other.
By show of hands, how many thought that was fiction? I am thinking one that didn't was former Nuclear Safety inspector Walter Wagner. You know, the guy who used to be responsible for keeping us safe from nuclear catastrophe who cannot distinguish between ridiculous comic book tales and the pressing need to sue the French/Swiss/US to keep them from starting up a science experience because if they do the universe might implode?
