Although the movie itself was actually quite pedestrian, The Running Man had some insight on the growth of violence in televised activities and playing games with death. It has been many, many years since I have seen it so it is possible I have forgotten or confused many elements, but here is a brief synopsis (is that redundant? Isn't a synopsis already brief?)
Criminals are put into a game where, if they survive, they win and are pardoned but if they lose they are killed. In fact, they lose by being killed.
Fortunately, we as a society are way too advanced for that. Instead, we go the opposite way...we televise a show where the 2 losers die because they don't get a kidney and the winner gets the kidney from someone about to die. Wow, nothing tasteless about that!
