Defining Fame

Although I mock her heartily for it, there is one certain thing about Anna Nicole Smith; she was famous. People knew her name. Sure, she was a waste of space, energy, time, and breath...but at least people knew who she was.

Memo to news places: If the person you are referring to requires you to explain they are famous....they aren't. They might be talented, wonderful, charming, worthwhile human being (Anna Nicole only missed on 4 of those adjectives...but she hit the "human being" part 100%), but they are NOT famous.

Take, for example, Mstislav Rostropovich. Go ahead. tell me all about him. Tell me about the time he...it is a he, correct? Tell me about the time he did that one thing. Or the time he went to that place and said that line. Or...well, okay, you get the point. Who is he?

My point; when your headline has to say "Famed" for us to realize we should know about him...he ain't famous. With that said, as a public service announcement I think I shall let you know that " Famed cellist Rostropovich dead at 80".

He should now become famous for having a name that would be impossible to spell.

How many "famed cellists" do you know, anyway?
