As I peeled back the banana, I noticed the Chiquita sticker with the fruit code (4011) and the country of origin...Guataemala...and suddenly it occurred to me how strange it all is. This banana lived in a country I never have seen and quite possibly might...okay probably won't...ever get to. It comes from a climate vastly different from mine and "saw" a variety of animal life, plant life, and weather that I might never experience.
And suddenly that struck me as really strange. On some level, we just accept that food appears without taking into account the distances it travels, the steps taken to get it from point A to point B...and how people in point B became aware of the food from point A and decided to purchase it.
And all for 49 cents a pound. If I could go for 49 cents a pound, it would only cost me a shade over a hundred bucks. Then I actually could go to Guatemala. And with the way I burn, you could peel me, too...
