More pointless than the Emmys or Golden Globes?

See, here is the thing about monuments. They actually need to mean something. The Vietnam Memorial is a useful monument. It means many things to many people. To those who served there or lost a loved one it is something, even if a small something, to say yes, this country remembers and cares. To those who hated everything about the war it says hey, look at the carnage caused by this senseless (?) war.

For some inexplicable reason there is no Grenada War Memorial. Possibly because I don't recall any casualties. There may have been. But seriously, how many of us remember what caused the "war"? Wasn't it about 30 minutes long? When the opposition wields pencils and erasers there is not a lot of action called for.

Monuments need to be to the memorable, the exceptional, the outstanding. Nobody wants to see trophies given out to the losers of the Super Bowl. We celebrate the Colts and authenticate the value of Manning's career because they won last year. Nobody is talking about how good a quarterback Grossman is because his team lost. Nobody wants to see him holding up the Vince Trophy (younger, lesser known and non-existent brother of the Lombardi trophy held up by the winners) and saying, "I'm going to Euro-Disneyland!"

For better or worse there are simply some trophies, monuments, etc., that nobody wants to look at. Coming in second or winning the Golden Globe is kind of like having Roseanne Barr modeling bikinis.

Not that we have anything against bikini or lingerie models. When done right it can be a wonderful thing. We just want them to look right. We want to look at things that are pleasing to the eye.

Of course, like anything else, there are exceptions. Some people actually care who won the Directors Award at the Cannes Film Festival. Others want to build a monument to ugly people. Wow, great idea there. I was going to contribute but the guy before them was taking up a collection for the Grenada War Memorial and I have nothing left to give.
