A lot of people have dismissed the original The Love Bug movie as a lightweight Disney comedy. Those people do not remember (or were not there) the night Dad, Mom and I watched it together. The hour was late when we started but it was in the early days of VCR-dom when watching a movie on tape was still fresh and new. This was quite an event...from time to time we had rented a tv and vcr (yes, we had to rent them...we owned none of them) and watched a carefully selected movie or two. But it was usually a couple of us kids or Mom & Dad or something...this was the first family viewing.
So with a nice bowl of buttered and salted popcorn made "the right way"...that is, putting oil in a pan and popping it in there, heating butter in a separate container on the stove, mixing them together with a wooden spoon with just the right touch of salt...
excuse me, had to wipe away the drool there...
with popcorn in bowl and soda in bottle we settled in to watch the implausible tale of a VW bug outrunning Ferraris and Lamborghinis. And we laughed. And laughed. And laughed some more.
And by the time we reached the climactic moment when the car split in half with the read end carrying Buddy passed the front of the car carrying the stars we were splitting too...at least, our sides were. Almost as much as we had earlier at Buddy's expression as the rear tire went bounding past the car on a steep winding roadway.
Wait...did I call this an "implausible tale"? Apparently I have never checked out the Swiss bussing system...
