And the winner is...

NOT Wayne Schenck. Oh, you might think he is...after all, he won a million dollar New York lottery. That is usually a good thing (for the first few months, anyway...for a little "light" reading check out some of the studies done on how winning the lottery "wrecked" the lives of the winners...how you wreck the life of a beer swilling, cigarette smoking, baseball cap wearing dude in a trailer with holes in the roof that hasn't been swept for months by giving him/her money is a little beyond me, but....whatever).

Well, in Wayne's case he has cancer and only a few months to live. So you would think he would use his winnings to get the treatment he needs. Only one problem...the lottery won't give him the money.

Right now a lot of people who read the article probably adopt my initial attitude that yeah, the lottery should break their rules and help a man out. But let's step back and look at this from a fresh angle.

Those were the rules before he played...and they are there for a reason. The lottery is not an inexhaustible source of fluid funds...the prizes are paid out that way to keep the lottery solvent. Leaving aside my hatred for government run lotteries...that is something you should not mess with. If his reason is legitimate, why ISN'T it legitimate for the person who wants to retire and travel the country to see dying relatives? Or for someone to have a surgery to cure a hump back? Or to...well, you get the picture.

But let's put the blame where it really belongs. Apparently there are treatments available...but since he does not have money in hand they won't do it for him. I am not going to name the center named in the article because it is my suspicion there are other hospitals with the capability...and they are not stepping up to the plate.

When money is more important than extending a guys life a few years it says an awful lot about our country and our world...especially when you would get your money, just not when you wanted it.

I hope one of these places that cashes out winnings gets together with this guy and gives him his shot at life...and I hope the people in the hospitals responsible for making the decisions so far are able to "enjoy" the same problem Schenck had...and nobody steps up with the miraculous save.

We finally have a good use for lottery winnings and he can't do it. That just sucks.

I think it's immoral that any facility would send someone off to die because they couldn't pay for treatment, and that with all of the taxes we pay, we still don't have access to health care unless we pay for it ourselves.
