Some things have never made much sense, yet history shows repeated instances. For instance, a happy and contented labor force is unlikely to stir up trouble and thus the government should feel safer, yet over and over history shows the government of almost every nation that ever existed suppressing the workers. As a result, they have been at odds with anyone seen as representing the working man.
So what could be more fun than the United States Department of Labor quoting Samuel Gompers?

Heh, the first day I will be payed for after officially starting my new job I am not actually working. Why? Because I officially started yesterday (Friday) and Monday is Labor Day. :P That's timing. By the way, did I ever tell you I got the job? I can't recall. :P
