Now, one thing to remember when reading the work of other people (and this includes me) is they have an agenda. As such, their work should be examined critically. Why are they making this claim? What do they hope to get out of it? What is their motivation?
With that in mind, here is something that has given me some things to think about that will be quite controversial. Let me say up front as I have said many, many times before: I am sure there is such thing as a justifiable war; World War II comes close, but other than that I can not think of a single justified war the United States has participated in...and that includes the Revolution. Wars of aggression, rebeliion against rightful rulership, these checker our history.
At the same time, the way the war is being portrayed in the media may not be (read "is not even remotely close to") accurate. It never ceases to amaze me how divergent my friends view the war. I have one set of friends who always talks about the soldiers they talk to who see nothing but hatred and resentment. I have another group who talks about how the soliders and civilian contractors they talk to in Iraq see nothing but gratitude and people ecstatic about what has happened.
The media is like a shark..wherever they smell blood they realize the wind is blowing the scent that way and attack. Here is something claiming media representations of the war are way off base. As yet another warning, I have not verified the accuracy of the statistics, but it is something worth researching and thinking about.

Now, I would point out certain flaws: for example, he uses statistics for a "major war". Agree or disagree with his premise, that phrase needs some defining. Does Iraq qualify as a "major war"? I can see legitimate arguements both ways. It depends on how you measure it: total numbers of personnel committed by 1 side? by 2? length? economic cost? distances? etc. Many things can be considered.
Some of the sidebars are interesting, others aren't. I recommend you only read this when you have time to think about it, and please go in with an open mind, neither planning to agree with him nor planning to disagree. I don't know if he changed my mind on what is happening but he certainly makes some points that, as what I hope is an honest intellectual, I need to consider. Hope you find the link valuable.

I really don't have time to read that article right now, but I did notice his rational starts by comparing fatality rates in other wars. While this seems logical, I believe another route to be more practical. When people (in particular government but anyway) choose to stop supporting the legal sale of alcohol, something the statistics say are related to more deaths each quarter than this war (even if you include Afghanistan and any other random battles) has in the last 3 years, (It was '03 when we went in wasn't it? Or did it start in '02?) I will take a look at their issues with the casualties in this war.
I agree - isn't every war "major"?
