The school of hard knocks

Is it just me or do some people seem to take excessive pride in coming "from the school of hard knocks"? It is a frequent theme in music, particularly gangsta rap but also some more mainstream things. It is a theme in many, many movies. Pity the star who had an easy life...nobody cares. Everyone wants to hear about the person who failed and failed and failed.
Well, what I don't understand is this; all these people go to the school of hard knocks and then ring my doorbell. Huh? What am I missing? Isn't that a little wimpy? Or worse yet...I get a "tap tap tap" on my door. If you really went to the school of hard knocks, shouldn't it be KNOCK KNOCK KNOCK ?
I mean seriously...what are they teaching people at the School of Hard Knocks? Just another example of education run amok.

They're trying to teach them to stop tap-tap-tapping softly, or bang-bang-bang too loudly. A knock-knock-knock is a good compromise. At least that's what I took away from those classes ;)
