A customer of a customer has been having issues with some doors. Okay, that happens. We sent him a replacement. Then another. Then another. And he keeps finding more and more wrong with them. Today in discussions with him, I mentioned that the replacements we would send Thursday might have the same issue since the complaint he was registering is actually something that the hardware manufacturers specifically account for.
In retrospect, I might be able to come up with better phrasing than I used. Maybe. But what I said was dead-on accurate. Here is the best part. He wants to demonstrate authority and credibility, so he pops off with "Well, I have put in over a hundred doors."
Wow. Nice number. Three digits. I suppose I could mention that when I worked in the shop there were single DAYS where we put together a hundred doors. Every week we ship out 3 - 5 hundred doors. I have been doing this volume for nearly four years. You do the math...suffice it to say, 1-upping me with a hundred door total is just asinine.
People fall into that trap frequently. I have had people read one article in a magazine and challenge me on topics such as Cochise or Tecumseh. I suppose it could have been a GREAT article...but don't challenge me with "I just read the "Ten Things Tecumseh did Wrong" in The Illiterate Historian and think it will lend weight to your argument...I probably have a dozen books on my shelf right now dealing with Tecumseh, and i have more than a passing familiarity with each of them.
By the same token, I am not going to knock off 5 burgers and tell a chef how to cook. His or her experience and training are a little more impressive than me dropping a little Lawrys and blackening a pan.
I guess what I am saying here is don't get such a big head from a little experience. As much as I might have studied on Tecumseh or any other historical facet that caught my attention, I have had so many professors of whom I stand in awe. Their breadth and depth of knowledge and understanding is something I can only hope to attain with age and experience. It would be ridiculous for me to think the little reading and researching and thinking I have done puts me in their league.
However, I CAN tell you the right way to blog. After all, I have written at least ten of them.
