I love baseball in streaks. Sometimes I love it a lot...sometimes I will go a couple seasons without watching so much as a single game. Tonight I am trying to recover from stupidity (I basically dumped about 3/4 bottle of ammonia down the tub...my eyes are tearing up and it is quite noxious) so I have been trying to fix a couple minor computer issues...which is pretty funny in and of itself. I am not known for my ability to fix things.
As I do so I thought I would see how my beloved Dodgers are doing. They are 8 games into the season. 8 games into a 162 game season. They have played approximately one of every 20 they will play. And the site...already has "magic numbers" posted.
If you don't know what a magic number is in sports...it is basically the time when a team mathematically clinches a playoff berth. Any combination of them winning and the opponent losing that matches that number will guarantee them a playoff birth. The Dodgers magic number is 154....in a 162 game season. It is good to know if they go 154 and 0, even if the teams chasing them do the same, they will have the spot locked up.
How stupid is that? Do we REALLY need "magic numbers" and standings in the WILD CARD RACE posted in April? Seriously, if your team is already focused on the wild card..you need to change sports and watch badminton. That is just pathetic.
I guess if anyone wondered in we had too much time on our hands, the question has now been answered.
I would write more but I need to get my calculator to figure out the percentage chance the Dodgers have of holding their 2 or 3 game lead over the next 6 months. After all, figuring out their win-loss record in home games played after away games when it is raining in the Saharan Jungle Forest and snowing in the Mohave Desert when Brad Penny pitches on three days rest after throwing over 100 pitches in his previous outing but less than 127 in the three previous outings takes time, as does cross-referencing those results with their winning percentage in games where 31% of the audience has green eyes as compared to the number of disco fans in the park Friday night when Boston is playing at the podunk county fair.
I think I need to write an ode to statistics.
Planning Summerfield
-
We are playing Summerfield. It is a pretty soft course, looks like a 116
slope, 2300ish yards. 6 par 4s, 3 par 3s, par 33 course. I have played it
